Four months of block driving under the Western Scheldt: accessibility becomes a rationing question
A thirty-metre crack forces the eastern tube of the Western Scheldt Tunnel to close for four months. With a detour via Antwerp ruled out, traffic has to share a single tube in alternating blocks. Zeeland is rationing the remaining capacity through a permit system and has doubled its mitigation package to 22.1 million euros. Central government is not contributing.
