Artificial intelligence is no longer a thing of the future — it is a practical tool that is already changing the working methods of environmental managers. At Innovom, we actively experiment with AI applications in our daily practice. In this article, we share our experiences and insights.

Why AI is relevant for environmental management

Environmental management revolves around information: legislation and regulations, policy documents, environmental visions, participation reports, environmental impact assessments. The volume of relevant documentation on a large infrastructure project can run to thousands of pages. Making sense of, summarising and connecting all that information traditionally takes a great deal of time.

Modern AI tools — particularly large language models — are capable of quickly analysing, summarising and searching large amounts of text. This offers concrete opportunities for efficiency improvements.

Practical applications

Analysis of policy documents

Environmental visions, zoning plans and environmental programmes often contain valuable information relevant to a project. With AI, it is possible to quickly determine which policy principles are relevant, without reading every document from cover to cover. This significantly accelerates the preparation of permit applications.

Stakeholder analysis

Large projects involve dozens to hundreds of stakeholders. AI can help structure responses from participation processes, identify recurring themes in objections and draft a structured response document. What previously took days can now be accomplished in hours.

Communication materials

Writing clear communication about technical subjects — nitrogen deposition, noise exposure, vibrations — is a skill in itself. AI tools support the conversion of technical reports into readable texts for residents and administrators.

Monitoring of environmental developments

Regulations change constantly. AI can be used to monitor relevant legislation, case law and policy developments, ensuring advisers always work with up-to-date insights.

The human element remains essential

Despite all its possibilities, AI also has limitations that are crucial in environmental practice. AI tools make mistakes, miss context and do not understand the local dynamics of a project. A resident who objects out of fear of property devaluation requires a human response — not an automated one.

At Innovom, we operate on the principle that AI supports, but the adviser decides. Every AI-generated document is critically reviewed by a subject matter expert before it leaves the office.

Ethics and due diligence

Using AI in a professional environment comes with responsibilities. We do not process confidential client information through external AI services without adequate safeguards. Data privacy and information security are preconditions, not afterthoughts.

Looking ahead

Developments are moving fast. We expect AI to become increasingly deeply integrated into the tools environmental managers use in the coming years — from GIS systems to participation platforms. Those who invest in knowledge of this technology now will be well-positioned in the future.
